about

Collected by Yorkshire local, Neil Campbell (Astral Social Club), The Harrowing of the North tips its hat to decades of innovation and weirdness that have erupted from the north of England while keeping a firm eye on the future and the bizarre young-comers who call all those picturesque hills and dales home.

Featuring psych-noise Yorkshire legends Ashtray Navigations and Vibracathedral Orchestra, the compilation also peers at the cut-up madness of Stuart Chalmers, the short-burst intensity of Guttersnipe, the minimalism of Eleanor Cully, Phil Legard and John Clyde-Evans, and, perhaps most gorgeously, the strange new wave of folk-influenced sounds from Sophie Cooper, Hawthonn and Soon the Light. And that's not an exhaustive list. There's a reason we've spent the last couple of years planning this compilation with Neil: Yorkshire has an incredibly fertile musical imagination and, while we might not be the first to trumpet it, we're certainly very proud to help spread the word.
